Four Walls, Four Songs
Try this suite of songs, in collaboration with big questions, visuals and my friendship with a sculptor.
I finished this sketch last night; Jean really liked it. "Am I the first person to hear this?” is what she asked me, chewing gum. She snuck in halfway through recording the second piece because I was making so much noise. She says you can hear her pop her bubble gum bubble on the recording and worried she’d ruined the take — I assured her she’d only made it better, but I never found the pop.
I have loved writing this piece, mostly because it has meant spending time with Thomas Sayre, whose Four Walls opens at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC on April 26. I’ve loved throwing out all notions of song structure, making space for the visual, the material and the spaced between. I hope I have made way for another entry point into the layers of questions Thomas asks with this work.
Performing in the space with the pieces is a really exciting thing to think about - that should happen in September. But let’s test drive it here and see how it stands alone. This demo is quick and compact and one takes — there is lots of room for expanding themes, more interesting transitions, and another instrument…. Love tift
