Nightcap no. 17

New Song
4

During the pandemic, Nightcaps gave me a new, intimate way to tell stories and sing kindness into the world. Nightcap is now a Substack, my studio archive to make sure I don't go too long without singing to you, and an invitation into the projects I've been working on and the questions that bind them.

Song of the First Song

Where does all the singing go?
That's what I want to know.
Does it travel light years in the dark?

Further than a prayer has been,
Shaking a tambourine,
Carrying the tune for the stars.

You know, sometimes it seems
My dreams are the dreams of the very first dreams,
And so it might not be wrong,
My song is a song from the very first song,
Still humming along.

Maybe a song made the sky.
Maybe it was a choir
Singing forth beginning light.

Water knows water before,
The beat runs into one more,
Maybe there's an echo keeping time.

You know, it always seems
My dreams are the dreams of the very first dreams,
And so it might not be wrong,
This song is a song from the very first song,
Still humming along.

The world makes a great big noise,
Something little as a voice,
Nobody knows just what it means.
