Where did January go?
A highlight of my January was spending time working with my friend Thomas Sayre. Thomas and I both found ourselves approaching hard questions about lapsed ideals in respective mediums during the pandemic, and our conversations about that work have opened up their own world. This year at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, we will debut Four Walls, Four Songs, a sound response exploring the burned, brushed, rusted and razed layers of Sayre's Four Walls. I like to say I’m in a band with a sculpture; it’s such a different kind of exploration than a “stand alone” song, in conversation with the materials, the visual and the space between. What sound shape does that take? Really, I’m in a band with Thomas, not just his pieces. This work is, most of all, about our very wonderful friendship. We are kindred spirits in our making and in our approach to the world. I hope, when this is finished, the listener will feel a part of the hours Thomas and I have talked about life, the properties of working with concrete, which lyrics were working and whatever else was on our minds.
This isn’t finished, but here is a taste. I’m grateful to Thomas for our band and we will see you at the museum later this year.
