My daughter pulls her shirt around her back and over head so only a small peephole of an eye remains. “I am a mystery,” she announces. She is certain at any moment she might turn into an owl and fly away.
Some years ago, as that baby slept across my lap in a European train car, the speeding, red desert made immediate something I had known probably forever. I was not going to raise my daughter in transit.
What happened next —leaving tour life — is a mystery, a widening, a surprise. A new measuring stick which threw away the other. Instead of following the road and the record, I began following questions without prerequisite forms. I collect objects as lyrical presences and forgotten language in abandoned spaces. I am in conversation with archives and more importantly, archivists. My projects these days are sometimes musical, sometimes interviews with artists, sometimes not quite yet forward facing. Whether band practice, public history or cross-silo collectives, I pursue how I to use my voice to affect positive change. This is my studio keyhole — a travelogue of projects in motion, an archive of process that at any moment might turn into an owl and fly away.
